Survey on the Health of the Māori
Language
The data collected through the surveys
on the Health of the Māori Language is useful for
language planners, hapū, iwi, community groups,
researchers, schools, government departments and others,
to help develop and support Māori language initiatives
at all levels.
The latest Māori language survey data from 2006 was released in July 2007.
Comparisons can be made between the data collected from 2006 survey and the previous 2001 survey to show the beginnings of new trends. For example it can be seen that over the past five years there has been an increase in the frequency of people speaking Māori to children in the home. Intergenerational transmission is essential for successful Māori language regeneration so we would hope to see this trend continue and increase over time.
