Commission Chief Executive Ngahiwi Apanui says the booklet supports the Commission’s new role defined by the Māori Language Act 2016, which is to promote the Māori language to wider New Zealand.

“The idea is for te reo Māori to be used everywhere by everyone.”

The booklet includes the words to the Ka Mate haka and the National Anthem and links to online accounts by reo champions Wayne ‘Buck’ Shelford and Hinewehi Mohi about their work to support te reo Māori.

It includes place names, pronunciation and sporting terms like:

‘Karawhuia!’ – ‘give it heaps’ and ‘kei hea te pōro?’ – ‘where’s the ball.’
