The board of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori – the Māori Language Commission – is now at full strength with the appointment of two new members for three year terms. The new members’ first meeting was on Monday.

Te Taura Whiri Board Chair Wayne Ngata has welcomed the appointment of Hinerangi Edwards (Taranaki, Ngāruahine, Ngāti Ruanui, Te Arawa) and Wayne Panapa (Waikato Maniapoto) by Māori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell.

"Hinerangi has skills in strategy and governance and Wayne in financial management and strategy, their combined expertise and knowledge will be invaluable to our new role of implementing a new Crown strategy announced for language revitalisation under the Māori Language Act 2016”, Dr Ngata says.

The full board is: Wayne Ngata (Chair), Charisma Rangipunga (Deputy), Hinerangi Edwards, Charlie Tepana and Wayne Panapa.

Sitting board member Charisma Rangipunga has been appointed to the role of deputy chair.

The new members replace Hinurewa Poutū, who is now overseas, and Professor Rawinia Higgins who has been appointed to the board of Te Mātāwai.

"I look forward to our board working at full strength again and thank Hinurewa and Rawinia for their contribution as part of Te Taura Whiri to securing the future of te reo Māori”.

Under the new Act Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori will have the lead implementation role, concentrating on increasing the use, visibility and status of te reo within government and wider New Zealand. A new body, Te Mātāwai, will represent and lead iwi, hapū and Māori organisations in supporting the transmission of te reo Māori from generation to generation.

Dr Ngata, in welcoming the new Board members, said the most important tasks for the two ogranisations will be to ‘mahi tahi’ (work together).

• Ms Edwards is currently a director and consultant with Aatea Solutions with a focus on relationship management and strategy.

• Mr Panapa is a chartered accountant and an experienced manager. He is a Divisional Finance manager for WEL Networks Ltd and chairman of Ngā Kaitatau Māori o Aotearoa – the National Māori Accountants Network.
